The busy lifestyle that most families enjoy is creating a problem. Instead of paying attention to our diets, mom and dad are buying foods that are quick and easy to prepare. Fast cooking is no substitute for healthy foods and over time an unhealthy diet results in weight gain and a gradual deterioration in our health. The secret is to select the foods we eat with care and be aware of these five foods to never eat.
1. Breads Made With Refined White Flour
You might think that you are doing your family a favor when you make them a sandwich for lunch, but if you are using white bread, then the opposite is actually true. White bread is made from flour that has been highly processed. Highly processed flour has had all of the nutrition removed from it. When your family bites into the sandwich, they are eating bread that is filled with preservatives, has very little value nutritionally, and is often filled with sugar.
Instead, buy breads made with whole grains. Whole grains will satisfy hunger for longer and contain vitamins and even some protein. These grains help your body to work better, so you will experience enhanced health and won’t be tempted to eat a second or even a third sandwich in order to feel full.
2. Deep Fried Foods
Who doesn’t love a serving of french fries from a fast food restaurant? They are designed to taste good and the carbs contained within those potatoes deliver a high dose of energy over the short term. However, french fries are cooked in saturated oils that are linked to heart problems. In addition, they are loaded with calories that will start packing on the pounds.
The culprit is not the potato, but the way the potato is cooked. Consider making baked potatoes in the oven. To mix it up, try making some baked sweet potatoes for your family. The orange color in those potatoes is packed with healthy beta-carotene that will improve your skin and give you long lasting energy.
3. Sugary Cereals
Packaged cereals are a simple and fast way to feed your kids in the morning, but they are one of the worst ways for kids to start their day. If you look at the ingredients list, you won’t be able to pronounce the name of many of the preservatives that are added and the amount of sugar they contain is way more than anyone needs in their daily diet. Kids love their cereal in the morning, but there are other choices that are better for their bodies and their minds.
Consider swapping out the high sugar cereals for a healthier brand that contains more whole grains. Boil up a few eggs to add some protein to their morning meal or make some pancakes with a peanut butter spread. A breakfast that contains proteins, grains, fruit, and some dairy is the best way to start the day.
4. Chips And Other Snacks
Potato chips, fritos, and cheese puffs are plenty tasty and it is easy to mindlessly snack on them once you get home for the day. However, these foods are another example of nutritionally deficient foods. They are often greasy because of the way that they are prepared and contain alarmingly high amounts of salt. High in calories, they tend to pack on the pounds and are linked to problems with high blood pressure.
If you do like this type of snack food, consider switching to brands that are baked instead of fried. Baked crackers are a great substitute. You can eat them with low fat cheese or some fruit and won’t find yourself craving any of the five foods to never eat.
5. Soft Drinks
Technically, pop is not one of the five foods to never eat, but it is a major player in the obesity epidemic and is linked to the increased rate of diabetes. Even if the soda you are drinking is sugar-free, it is still filled with sweeteners that are just as bad, if not worse, than sugar.
If you want flavor in your drinks, pour yourself a glass of water and squeeze some fresh fruit juice into it. Lemons and limes are great for you, but some peach syrup or pineapple syrup will add flavor and actually help your digestive processes. Natural green teas are another good choice for people who want to curb their appetites but still stay hydrated.
Simply by eliminating these foods, you can start improving your family’s overall health and will be surprised by how quickly the pounds start falling off. Once you understand which foods to eliminate from your diet, it is time to start learning about which foods to add to it. You’ll love the difference in how you feel and how much better you will look.
